Gordon Cockburn was born in Toronto and attended the Huron Street Public School and Saint Andrew’s College before entering UTS. He went on to study Applied Science at the University of Toronto and later joined the firm of Cockburn & Bundy. He joined the 43rd Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery in 1916, arriving in France the following summer. He saw action at the Somme, where he was wounded, and Vimy Ridge. After Vimy he was seconded to the 19th Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps, where he was wounded during the Battle of Ypres and Passchendaele. Forced to land behind enemy lines at Houthem, he was immediately treated by the Germans but succumbed to his wounds at the dressing station on the day of his crash. He is buried in Passchendaele New British Cemetery in Flanders, Belgium, but his family also built a monument to his memory in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. “He gave his life for duty, freedom and honour.”
